Datuk Dr Ir Hj Abdul Latif Mohd Som DSDK,PMW

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

​

Datuk Dr Ir Abdul Latif Mohd Som, 61, a Professional Engineer and a Chartered Engineer (UK), is currently an Executive Chairman of KL Prima Consult Sdn Bhd, an established medium-sized Engineering Consulting firm.

​

Datuk Dr Ir Abdul Latif began his full-time career as a Structural Engineer in Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) in 1979 and after a three-year stint, he furthered his education in the UK for a postgraduate degree. Upon his return from the UK, he served as a Structural Engineer for almost three years in one of Malaysia’s largest and established engineering Consultancy firm, Minconsult Sdn Bhd. Subsequently, he joined United Engineers (M) Bhd as a Senior Civil Engineer for a short stint prior to becoming a Project Manager in Sime UEP Bhd in 1989. As a testimony of his good performance in Sime UEP Bhd, he was promoted to the position of a General Manager of a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sime UEP viz. SEA Drillers Construction Sdn Bhd, in 1990.

His quest for building a career of his own in professional engineering consultancy business began in 1991 when he quit his senior position in Sime UEP to become a Director & Shareholder of an established Civil & Structural engineering consultancy firm, Kumpulan Jurutera Maju Sdn Bhd.  Subsequently, in 1996, in supporting the then Malaysian government’s encouragement to increase the number of Bumiputra’s techno-entrepreneurs community, Datuk Dr Ir Abdul Latif formed KL Prima Consult Sdn Bhd in 1996 with three other widely-experienced Bumiputra professional engineers. Since its inception and with his dynamic capabilities, KL Prima Consult Sdn Bhd has steadily grown to its current form as one of the leading medium-sized Bumiputra consulting engineers firm having exposures in various disciplines of civil & structural engineering from simple to complex structures as well as from a simple local roads to complex highways & expressways and infrastructural facilities which includes BRT, LRT and MRT.

He holds a Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) from the University of Birmingham, UK in 1979, an MBA from the University of Edinburgh, UK in 1983 and a PhD in Built Environment from UiTM in 2014.

​

Outside the engineering consultancy fraternity, Datuk Dr Ir Abdul Latif has been very active in community work through his involvements in various non-governmental organisations (NGOs). He has been a Council Member of Road Engineering Association of Malaysia (REAM) from 1996 to date, Chairman of Gabungan Jurutera Perunding Bumiputra Malaysia from 2000 to date, and Chairman of Taman Tun Dr Ismail Residents Association, from 2004 to 2010. He had earlier served as an Advisory Board Member of DBKL for two terms (2000-2013) and also a Board Member of Board of Engineers Malaysia for the 2013/2014 term.
